Foam Light

Wait a minuet…there’s nothing green about styrofoam. True, but I still love what light looks like when it passes through. This idea may not be suitable in a sustainable way for mass production, but just making one to experiment with is O.K., right?
The thing that I’m exploring is how to capture light inside a structure as it bounces around inside, and then shoot that light out through small cracks. Glass and acrylics do not trap light as well as paper and styrofoam. I don’t want to see any structural elements- just lines of light.

merry Christmas

If you’re an industrial designer you can’t just buy gifts for everyone at Christmas, you’ve got to make someone something. My sister got this candle holder from me last Christmas. It’s a very simple form and design, but I like the use of plumber’s cast iron end caps as candle holders.

Community + Art = Good

This Birmingham Art Collective event was planned in a part of Birmingham due for some redevelopment. We picked one of the few restored buildings, Woodrow Hall to have an art show and draw people into the area. The show was a lot of fun, but I learned one important thing- event planning is not my forte.
That being said, I had tons of fun developing a poster for the show with a graphic designer friend of mine. He drew a very cool illustration, and I combined spray paint stencils and screen printing to finish it off.

PUSH show

PUSH Product Design was invited to show an exhibit at UAB’s visual arts gallery. I was in charge of the layout and graphics, and thankfully I finished everything on time. The show turned out to be a pretty cool display of what industrial design is all about.

Crazy big kinetic sculpture

This was a project I helped work on at PUSH. The client was McWane Science Center located in downtown Birmingham. They wanted to add an interactive and kinetic piece to their plaza. We did a lot of thinking, modeling, and drawing and finally arrived at a design that complimented the building’s exterior by wrapping around the huge IMAX dome. The panels were interactive through sensors embedded in the light pavers on the plaza floor. I helped with presentation animations, renderings, and initial CAD modeling.

Inspiration Thursday!

You have to keep the excitement live, right? I started this group called Inspiration Thursday that meets once a month on a Thursday night. The format is kind of like show-and-tell. Every gets about 15min. to talk about something cool they’ve discovered.
Sometimes inspiration occurs spontaneously, like when we opened a wine bottle with a power drill.

welcome to Greensboro…

Where do I start when talking about Greensboro? So much cool stuff.
Recently I went to down to check out Project H’s airstream as it passed through. While there I stopped in at the PieLab for some….pie of course! Then I checked out one of the latest Rural Studio creations- a spaceship looking concession stand. very cool.

ICFF!

Last May (09) I flew up to NY to see ICFF and hang out with some friends from college. Thankfully, they knew their way around the subways and I did not get hopelessly lost at any point. The 2nd image above shows a round table discussion that was given called “German Design.” A representative from Porsche and Siemens and some other influential German creatives discussed their design philosophies.
